Baik Ok-Mi

Abstract
Little attention has been paid investigating the meaning and experiences of home while there is a strong focus on housing and support in the aging-in-place literature in Korea. The purpose of this study was to investigate the lived experiences and the meaning of home in later life. Older people, ranging in age from 68 to 88 years, participated in in-depth focus group interviews(N=35). Results show that the meaning of aging-in-place was linked to the concept of independence, autonomy, healthy and a sense of social connection. Living arrangements and amenities have a little importance when they choose where to live. Transportation and social connection factors were much more important in Korean elderly when they think where to move in later life. Also, the meaning of home in later life, especially for the elderly living in a congregate housing was seen as a sense of nostalgia, refugee, and social inclusion. The meaning of home is a pragmatic concept later than ideal one in Korean elderly. Also, for Korean elderly, the concept of aging in place need to be reconstruct in that£º1) attachment to their hometown was seen as relatively little important factor than the one reported from the previous literature, and 2) when they think a home, equality and sense of community were seen more important for Korean elderly. Based on the results, future studies need to develope more detailed structure of meaning of home for Korean elderly group.
